Don't Ignore These Costs Involved With Relocating Your Home

Posted on: 18 April 2016

If you are planning on moving house soon, you will likely be considering the different costs associated with moving. However, don't stop at factoring in packing materials, gas for your own vehicle, and the cost of renting a moving truck or hiring movers. There are also a few more costs that you need to budget in as well. Here are some costs that are often forgotten about in terms of relocating your home.

Cleaning and Repairs

There are a variety of cleaning and repair costs you need to keep in mind. First of all, if you want a chance at getting the security deposit back at your current home if you're a renter, you will need to make sure the home is spotless. This may include hiring a professional housecleaning service or at least renting a carpet cleaning machine to remove stains. If any repairs need to be done, it is best that you do them before having the walk-through inspection by the landlord or the damage will be taken out of your security deposit. If you are selling your home, you will also likely be hiring a move-out cleaning service. When getting to the new place, you might also want a cleaning company to make sure the home is ready for you to move-in without dust or stained floors.

Temporary or Long-Term Storage

It is possible that during the move, you find that you need to rent a self-storage unit. This is also going to cost you more, whether you have it for one month or a year. This may be something that comes up last minute, such as if the person who was going to help you move had a sudden change of plans and you now need to move belongings to a storage unit until you can hire professional movers for the furniture and boxes. You might also need storage if you start moving belongings into your new home and find that some furniture is not going to fit.

Additional Fees

Be prepared for some additional fees concerning hiring movers or renting a moving truck that you were not aware of. This may include paying more for gas for the moving truck than you anticipated, having surcharge fees for transportation services, or paying additional fees if you decide to get full-service moving services instead of just moving packed boxes and furniture. If the movers are going up an elevator or upstairs in your new apartment, they might charge an additional fee since it takes more time and energy to get the moving done.
